Cornell Showcases Peggy Dunlop’s Student-Crafted Red Dress

At Cornell University, a red dress made by Peggy Flynn Dunlop ’59, MS ’63 as a sophomore in a pattern-design course is now on display. The dress, which Dunlop only wore to a few fraternity Christmas parties, earned her high praise in class and was carefully kept over the years.

Today, the dress forms part of the Fashion + Textile Collection housed in Cornell’s College of Human Ecology. More than 10,000 items of apparel, textiles, and accessories dating from the 18th century to the present are part of the collection.

Denise Green ’07, an associate professor of human centered design and collection director, said the dress’s design shows “an exceptional level of craftsmanship and originality for a student garment.” She also noted that the dress is deeply personal to Dunlop and reflects her careful attention to design details and her sense of modesty and movement.

The dress is on temporary exhibit in a display case in the Human Ecology Building.
